At the end of Grade 1, pupils should be able to:


LISTENING WITH UNDERSTANDING
 Identify sounds of some consonants (b, p, m, f,…) and/or vowels (ɑ, o, e,...)
 Identify sounds of some common words used daily (teacher, water, …)

 Enjoy listening to short and simple rhymes and songs (two tigers, running
song, …)
 Begin to understand how the language is spoken through small aural texts

(songs and stories)
 Follow simple instructions (e.g. come in, open the door, please sit properly)

 Demonstrate the ability to understand and respond to simple statements,
questions and comments. (Who?, What?, …)



SPEAKING
 Pronounce clearly some consonants (b, p, m, f,…) and/or vowels (ɑ, o, e,...)

 Participate in recitation of rhymes and singing with enjoyment (looking for
friends, song on wear clothes, ...)

 Begin to engage in simple oral activities (e.g. greetings, …)
 Speak clearly about self (e.g. name, family, ...)
 Ask and answer questions about pictures with support. (What is this?, Who is
he?,…)




READING WITH UNDERSTANDING
 Show interest in pre-reading exercises
 Recognise and name some consonants (b, p, m, f, ...) and/or vowels (ɑ, o, e,...)
 Begin to use simple strategies (e.g. decoding, cues, word spacing) to read

printed words
 Derive meaning from pictures using visual cues (e.g. actions, gestures)

 Read aloud level-appropriate short texts with support.



WRITING
 Master the basic strokes of Modern Chinese
 Show awareness of basic writing mechanics: write Chinese characters in the
