Health and Physical Education (HPE)
Health and Physical Education (HPE) plays an effective role in laying the
foundation for ALL learners to develop an active and healthy lifestyle.
To meet the objectives of health promotion, HPE as a learning area has
developed the concept of Human Wellness to include Fitness, Nutrition,
Stress Management and Avoidance of Substance Abuse. This concept
requires every individual to be responsible for setting his/her own
lifestyle goals in a self-directed manner. Health and Physical Education
offers experiential learning, with a curriculum that is relevant, engaging,
contemporary, enjoyable and developmentally appropriate. Integral to
HPE is the acquisition of movement skills, concepts and strategies that
enable learners to condently and competently participate in a range of
physical activities. Through HPE learners develop resilience, a strong
sense of self, build satisfying relationships and learn to take health-
enhancing decisions.
The aims of Health and Physical Education are to ensure that learners:
• Develop knowledge and skills, including life skills, that will enable them
to enjoy being active and healthy throughout their lives and become
socially responsible citizens.
• Participate safely and regularly in physical activities and other
childcentered activities that will foster their physical health, motor
development, social and mental health as well as creative and aesthetic
skills.
• Develop the movement competences and skills that will allow them to
participate in a range of physical activities, including games, sports and
dance.
• Develop an understanding of the factors that contribute to healthy
growth and development.
