You have learnt that ‘a plateau is an area of flat and high land’.
In the exercise Map 10, shade the area which is found inside the ring shown by
the dotted lines on page 36.
This wide area located in the centre of Mauritius is known as the Central Plateau
• The Central Plateau
is an area with high
amount of rainfall.
• Rivers usually have
their sources on
highlands.
3.2 formation of the central plateau
ACTIVITY
The Central Plateau has been formed by lava owing from volcanoes. The Central Plateau
is mostly at and undulating, as in the district of Moka. In other places, the plateau slopes
gently as in the north and south east where the height is between 150 to 200 metres. The
south west region of Grand Bassin and Plaine Champagne is higher and the height is
above 600 metres.
In Mauritius, many rivers have their sources
on the Central Plateau.
Is it the case for rivers 1, 2, 3 and 4?
In Map 10, write S (for source) at the place where
these rivers have their sources.
