They are the remnants of the big volcano which formed our island millions of years ago.
The top part of the big volcano collapsed and the weakest parts of the ring have been eroded.
Later rivers have carved valleys through the walls of the big volcano.
This is how the mountain ranges and mountains were formed.
Fieldwork
With the help of your teacher, plan and carry out a eld work at Trou of Cerfs.
Aim: To observe the main relief features in Mauritius.
Working in groups, you will:
a) observe, note down and draw sketches of the following relief features –
mountain ranges, volcanic cone and mountains.
b) note down the other natural features that you can see from Trou aux Cerfs.
