The area of highlands which stretches from east to west is known as the Central Ridge. It
consists of undulating land in areas such as at La Ferme and La Fouche Corail and the hilly
areas in the centre.
The Central Ridge has been formed by the action of volcanoes.
From La Fouche Corail in the west to Mt Grenade (206 m) in the east, many mounts/hills
can be seen. The ridge is higher in the east and the lava ows have formed mounts
such as Mt Limon (398 m) and Mt Malartic (392 m).
At times volcanoes in Rodrigues were explosive. They released large amounts of ash and
dust which covered the craters and the slopes of the ridge. This ash and dust solidied
to form tuffs. The undulating areas of la Ferme and La Fouche Corail on the west and the
slopes of Petit Brûlé, Roseaux and Mangues are made up of tuffs.
