Around most of the island the land slopes from the Central Ridge to the coast.
Picture 19 is a good illustration of Rodrigues’s sloping landform
The sloping lands, which are mostly made up of tuffs, have been highly eroded by rivers.
These rivers have carved out deep valleys in these soft rocks.
In Rodrigues, rivers transport mud known as alluvium. These alluvium have been deposited
along the river banks and on the lower parts
of the valleys near the river mouths. These alluvial deposits can be seen at the mouths
of River Mourouk, Rivière Cocos, Rivière Banane and at Baie aux Huîtres. These at and fertile
lands are intensively cultivated. Picture 20 shows alluvial deposits at Rivière Banane.
