After the departure of Van Warwick, other Dutch sailors on their way to the East Indies
stopped regularly in Mauritius.
Mauritius was a good source of food and water for the sailors. It had a good climate and
was free from diseases. It became a good ‘stop-over’ for food, fresh water and rest after
long months of travel at sea.

Pieter Both
Pieter Both mountain forms part of the Port Louis/Moka Range.
You can have a good view of this mountain from Trou aux Cerfs.
Do you know how the mountain got its name? Let’s nd out.
During their voyages in the Indian Ocean,
several Dutch ships stopped in Mauritius.
Pieter Both was a Dutch Governor of the East
Indies. On his way to Holland, he decided
to stop in Mauritius. A cyclone took him
by surprise. Many sailors, including Pieter
Both, died in the shipwreck.
It was in the honour of this Dutch Governor
that the mountain was named Pieter Both.
